BEING A BEAT MAKER IS COOL.
The role of the ideal producer in hip hop is dead and beat makers are taking up producer roles with ease. This is the age where kids download FL Studio, make their beats and send the WAV files to potential clients. And everyone does everything themselves at the confines of their bedroom with just a laptop.
Also, the music industry has managed to defy many conventions. It’s a no brainer to find many people in executive positions without a college degree nowadays.
I’ve seen a lot of people with important job titles come and go simply because they suck miserably at doing their jobs. Conversely, I’ve seen others with small titles demonstrate abilities and talents far beyond their job title or experience.
The issue of producer vs beat maker, specific to Hip Hop music, in most cases is about ego and money and I’ll try to be as fair as possible, focus less on semantics and stay about the music and business.
WHO IS A BEAT MAKER?
A Beat Maker is simply a person who makes/creates “Beats” using specialized computer software and hardware gears.
In many other genres the people that create the music are the band, but not in hip hop.
Before digital evolution, Beat Makers would use keyboards and sampling machines like an MPC to create beats (usually related most with genres like Hip Hop/RnB).
